Miette is a popular Bay Area pastry shop known for its classic macarons and imported candies filling a charming, pastel storefront. The candy and pastry shop has several locations throughout the Bay Area, and up until recently, the flagship store was in Hayes Valley. In September, the shop’s owner announced Miette’s flagship would be moving locations, although not far. The new storefront is located in Pacific Heights, on Fillmore Street. The area is a popular shopping corridor, with numerous high-end shops and boutiques. Miette’s owner cited low foot traffic and concerns over crime on the street as the reason for their move to the new location.

The new storefront is just as whimsical as the old flagship store, stocked with bags of candies, carefully decorated cakes, and a wall of jars filled with sweets. The shop includes over 100 bins of their signature Swedish Pick-n-mix, along with cakes, seasonal macarons, and shortbreads.

Miette was first started at the Berkeley Farmer’s Market by Meg Ray, selling only cakes. In 2005, Miette opened its first storefront in the Ferry Building, selling cakes, candies, and shortbreads. Over the years, the pastry shop has become a staple in the Bay Area, expanding to five locations. After 10 years in business, the shop started adding imported European candies. Meg Ray previously spent time living and baking in Sweden and France, and was inspired by the beauty of European pastries when she started Miette. The shop uses classic French techniques to make its goods while using unrefined ingredients.
