Less than a year after announcing layoffs and shuttering facilities in Oakland and San Francisco, Goodwill is expanding its Bay Area footprint — in a very different form — with a 27,000-square-foot store set to open in Fairfield (Solano County).

The nonprofit said Monday it will debut a new “larger-format” retail store and donation center at 1500 Oliver Rd. on April 16. The store will be open daily from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.

“This is an exciting time for Goodwill in the Bay Area,” said Tim O’Neal, president and CEO, in a statement. “This store and donation center is the beginning of the new look and feel for Goodwill stores in the Bay Area. We invite everyone to come out and celebrate with us.”

The Fairfield location is the first of several planned openings in 2026 and “the first of dozens planned over the next few years,” according to the organization.

Unlike traditional Goodwill stores, the new format is significantly larger, with sales floors nearly four times the size of typical locations. The design also includes expanded backroom space aimed at streamlining donation processing and improving drop-off convenience.

The opening follows a period of contraction. In April 2025, Goodwill notified state officials it would close facilities in Oakland and San Francisco, affecting 90 employees. At the time, the organization said the changes were intended to “better position the organization for future growth plans,” citing operational limitations at smaller sites.

Goodwill said the larger format was intended to improve both the shopping and donation experiences, with more room for inventory ranging from clothing and furniture to collectibles. The organization places thousands of items on its sales floor daily.

Revenue from those sales supports Goodwill’s broader mission, funding “no-cost career, training, and wellness services for the Bay Area community,” according to the organization.

To mark the opening, Goodwill will host a ribbon-cutting ceremony at 8:45 a.m. on April 16. The first 150 customers in line will receive a $5 gift card, and shoppers who donate items during opening weekend will be eligible for discounts on purchases.
