Another mural in Oakland is honoring hometown hero and two-time Olympic gold medalist Alysa Liu.
The artist and muralist, Tre, made his finishing touches to the mural on Monday. It’s located at Market and 22nd streets.
“She’s bringing a spotlight on everyone out here in Oakland,” Tre said.
Liu is the moment, and “The Town” raised the figure skater, who trains just five minutes from the corner where the mural is located.
Her spotlight is spreading excellence, driving the Providence Athletic Club to have her mural on the rolling garage door of their building.
“Alysa and her gold medal, that’s an example,” Providence Athletic Club owner Camilo Rivero said. “So I hope that people, when they walk up and down this street, don’t forget that power that we all carry inside.”
Two weeks ago, Riveros hosted a fundraiser to help pay for the mural. The following day, he bumped into Liu at Target.
“It was the wildest synchronicity. I couldn’t believe it,” Riveros said. “She looked more like taken aback by the idea that [the mural] was happening, in a positive way.”
