Anders Dreyer is a finalist for MLS Most Valuable Player and his contributions have helped San Diego FC to an already historic first season.
SAN DIEGO — It has been a historic inaugural season for San Diego FC.
The newest MLS team is finding success in large part due to midfielder Anders Dreyer. He is a finalist for MLS Most Valuable Player and Newcomer of the Year.
He has taken the league by storm. He has a combined 38 goals and assists, which is over half of San Diego FC’s total goals they have scored this season.
Despite all his success, he remains as humble as can be, like when CBS 8’s Karthik Venkatataman asked him about being a frontrunner for MVP.
“I don’t think about it too much, to be fair,” Dreyer said. “For me, I have said it before, if we could win every game here and I don’t score, I’d be okay because that means we win something. Of course, now I’m in the race of Most Valuable Player and of course it is nice to be recognized as a good player. That’s always nice. But it’s not the first thing I think about when waking up early in the morning, whether I’m going to win it or not. My first thought it how we can win with San Diego FC.”
Humble as he may be, make no mistake. This has been Dreyer’s dream.
He was born in Denmark. By the time he was 3 or 4, he was already playing soccer.
The son of a soccer coach, he would travel with his dad on road trips and seeing the togetherness of a soccer team inspired him.
That helped inspire Dreyer to be a pro soccer player.
“I have two sisters and they were always asking me at the dinner table, what I wanted to be when I grow up,” Dreyer said. “I always said a professional footballer. And they would say, ‘But what if you don’t become a professional footballer?’ And I would say. ‘I’m going to be a professional footballer.’ So I think I always worked hard for it, to achieve it and when I was 16 or 17 years old, that is really when I realized this could really be my dream come true.”
On San Diego FC’s roster, there are a couple of countrymen from Denmark who saw Dreyer grow up before he got to this point.
Forward Marcus Ingvartsen played with Dreyer on the Denmark U-21 national team.
“The shot he is showing in this league, he had it back then, very dangerous left foot,” Ingvartsen said. “So clinical, it’s amazing he is bringing that here too.”
Dreyer played for a few clubs prior to joining SDFC in Denmark, Russia and Belgium. But he wanted to play in America in the MLS.
“It’s been better than what I have dreamed of,” Dreyer said. “I think the way we have played here in San Diego and for me that’s a top way to play futbol, for me to play football. We have the ball a lot, we create a lot of chances. The MLS is getting better and better. Each team is good so if you’re not ready for the games, you will just lose the games. For me as well to increase my own level as a player as well it has been very good and I just enjoy it.”
His level has helped San Diego FC reach heights nobody could have guessed in their inaugural season.
The club set MLS records for most points and wins by an expansion team. They also claimed the top seed in the Western Conference headed into the playoffs.
We asked Dreyer if he saw all this success coming.
“No, he said with a laugh. “I think it has been a very nice season and what you have said there with points and wins, I think I went over here with my agent and family and talking that it is a new expansion team and stuff like that it could go both ways. Now we are standing here with that statistic and stuff like that. It’s still a little bit of a dream.”
The club plays with their Right to Dream style of play- full of daring passes, creating space and an aggressive attack,
A hard style to adapt to, but Dreyer has flourished.
“I think the way we play is top, it’s good for me as a player,” he said. “It’s also a credit to my teammates. You cannot win a game one against 11, it’s impossible. In that dressing room, the family feeling together has been so good. It’s not something I’ve seen very often in teams I’ve been with.”
He has also been clutch. scoring big goals in big games consistently.
“When you walk in here, you see talent, character and purpose,” head coach Mikey Varas said. “He embodies all of those. He has a tremendous ability to play futbol. He has the character to put the team first and he is a man on a mission. He wants to win.”
Dreyer now leads this team into their first playoff games in franchise history. He says he is approaching it calmly, but is ready.
He has always wanted to be ready for the big moments of his career. And he feels like he can bring more.
“Hopefully more goals, assists and trophies,” he said with a smile.
