A beleaguered Lake Tahoe ski resort abruptly ended its 2025-2026 season, the resort’s first after a year-long hiatus.
Homewood Mountain Resort announced Tuesday that March 22 would be its final day of operation. The Placer County resort will close after less than three months in operation this season, in part because of a dry December that delayed its opening to the weekend of New Year’s Eve, resort officials said.
“Mother Nature always gets the final word in the mountains, and this season she’s calling it a little early,” the resort wrote on social media. “We’re proud of our team for creating a great experience during a challenging winter and we’re grateful to everyone who joined us this season.”
The resort cited the “ups and downs” of this winter’s weather, which has delivered both major snowstorms and Sierra temperatures that crept toward the low 70s. With the Sierra snowpack dropping to less than half of normal levels for mid-March, Homewood isn’t the only resort struggling to stay open.
On Saturday, Dodge Ridge Mountain Resort in Tuolumne County announced that it would close for the season, barring another major snowstorm. The state’s northernmost ski area, Mount Shasta Ski Park, announced the week prior that it would also close after just 55 days in operation.
But Homewood has had more woes than most resorts. The 1,200-acre ski area is beloved among Tahoe locals, but a drop in ticket sales and season passes have brought financial troubles in recent years.
Homewood promised to keep the mountain open to the public despite concerns that it could turn into a private, members-only resort, but it was forced to close entirely for the 2024-2025 season. The shutdown came as Homewood awaited approval for its updated redevelopment plan. When the resort opened last December, it was without its new gondola, a project that won’t be completed until later this year.
Homewood said on social media this week that passes for next year’s season were already on sale.
“Our community is the heart of this mountain,” the resort wrote. “We are already counting down the days until we can welcome you back next winter.”
