BERKELEY, Calif. – The UConn baseball team (9-11) captured a 9-3 victory at the University of California (13-8) on a seasonably warm Tuesday evening at Stu Gordon Stadium.
The Huskies responded well to adversity on Tuesday with UConn going down 1-0 on a leadoff home run for Hideki Prather. UConn responded immediately in the second inning with a three-run frame to take the lead. Cam Righi and Nater set up the rally with back-to-back singles with one out. After a catcher’s interference for Evan Menzel loaded the bases, Bryce Detwiler tied the game with an RBI ground out.Â
Junior Chase Taylor, a Concord, Calif. native, made his return to Northern California and delivered a two-out, two-run single to give the Huskies their first lead of the night. Chase finished the night with a three-hit effort.Â
Rob Rispoli added to the lead in the fourth with a two-out RBI double. The shortstop recorded his third multi-hit game of the season.Â
Cam Righi pushed the lead to 5-1 in the fifth with an RBI double. The freshman registered three hits and reached base four times on Tuesday.Â
After some poor fielding in the bottom of the fifth closed the lead to 5-3, the Huskies responded in the sixth inning. Tyler Minick and Jackson Marshall hit back-to-back home runs to extend the UConn lead to 8-3.Â
Charlie Hale earned the victory on the mound with 5.1 innings and tied a career-high with seven strikeouts. RHP Austin Trumpour came on and earned his first career save with a season-high 3.2 shutout innings.Â
Next up, the Huskies face Santa Clara (9-9) on Wednesday, March 18 at 9 p.m. ET / 6 p.m. PT.
