A popular San Jose restaurant located in Santana Row, has now been force to temporarily close due to a cockroach infestation.

Last week, an inspector with Santa Clara County Environmental Health responded to a customer complaint at The Counter. The inspector found cockroaches in the restaurant and ordered it to shut down.

According to this report, the inspector found six cockroaches including one in the woman’s restroom, one near the ice machine after it fell from a utensil and two under a sink in the ice machine area.

Lucille Tse, a customer, said she is wondering if neighboring restaurants could have the same problem. She’s also concerned about the food she ate at The Counter recently.

“That’s a little worrisome to think about and reflect back. The possibility of ingestion,” she said.

Restaurant Manager Ricky Singh said since the inspection, The Counter has hired two separate pest control companies to get rid of the roaches, and the restaurant hopes to reopen soon after a follow up inspection.

NBC Bay Area reached out to Environmental Health, who sent a statement saying, “The facility has not requested a follow-up inspection. Facilities can open immediately following an inspection that confirms the problem was resolved.”

Some customers were surprised that a restaurant charging $24 for a burger would have cockroaches.

Others said they’ll be back when the doors reopen.

“Of course, I’m concerned about it but once they get it cleaned up, I am sure they’ll get it taken care of,” Ed Soper said.
