SAN DIEGO, CA — A man was hospitalized after being stabbed Tuesday evening while walking to a convenience store in San Diego, police said.

The attack was reported around 6:30 p.m. in the 4300 block of Keeler Avenue in the Mountain View neighborhood, according to the San Diego Police Department.

The 68-year-old victim was walking to the store while talking on his cellphone when an unidentified man approached him from behind and stabbed him once in the ribs, authorities said. The suspect then fled westbound on an electric scooter.

The victim told police he had seen the suspect earlier in a nearby alley, but there was no interaction at that time.

He was taken to a hospital, where he underwent surgery for injuries that were not considered life-threatening, police said.

The suspect was described as a Black man with a thin build, wearing a navy blue Chargers jersey and a black face covering.

Authorities urged anyone with information related to the stabbing to call the department or San Diego County Crime Stoppers at 888-580-8477.
