At the Movies…
PROJECT HAIL MARY
Andy Weir, former UCSD student, wrote “The Martian” which was turned into a good movie (Matt Damon). Folks loved how the science of it was done perfectly. Project Hail Mary is his next best seller, and it’s become another good movie that reminds me of his first (with a bit of Interstellar, The Passengers, and E.T. thrown in). This is a charming, sweet family movie. Ryan Gosling is perfect in it, as a teacher, who helps the government figure out what is destroying the sun; but we already know Goslin is great. Let’s talk about Sandra Huller. After hating two of her movies that all the other critics loved (Toni Erdmann and The Zone of Interest), she did a movie I loved – Anatomy of a Fall. She’s also terrific here as the tough as nails boss of the scientists and astronauts working on this problem. One of my problems with it was, just like with The Martian, I never felt the stakes were as high as they should’ve felt. That’s what happens when you throw in lots of humor. The flashback scenes work wonderfully. When we get one of the final ones, seeing how Gosling’s character ends up on the ship, it’s incredibly powerful. 3 ½ stars out of 5.
