A popular Ethiopian restaurant in Arden Arcade has changed ownership, becoming a sister restaurant to an Oakland favorite.

Dawit Kidane of Oakland’s Blue Nile Ethiopian Restaurant acquired Abyssinia Ethiopian Restaurant at 1346 Fulton Ave. on Feb. 25. The previous owner had put the business up for sale.

Since the change of hands, the front windows have been papered over, with signs alluding to the new ownership and that the new restaurant would come soon, sparking concern and curiosity among the business’s fans on social media.

Kidane is doing a remodel of the interior of the restaurant, but it will retain its original name.

He plans to alter the menu to mirror the one at his other restaurant, which serves classic Ethiopian dishes like wots, slow-cooked stews, and tibs, a meat stir fry. The dishes will be served with injera, an Ethiopian steamed sourdough bread.

Kidane’s foray into Sacramento is something of a homecoming.

“I used to live here, and I have a lot of siblings in the area. I plan to relocate here after the summer,” he said.

He intends to reopen Abyssinia Ethiopian Restaurant on April 1.
