BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KBAK/KBFX) — The Bakersfield School District released a statement stating they are evaluating all options regarding the name for Cesar Chavez Elementary School amid allegations against the labor leader.
A New York Times investigation has reported that civil rights leader Dolores Huerta is among several women who say they were groomed and sexually abused by labor leader Cesar Chavez.
The statement said:
Our district is saddened by the recent allegations regarding Cesar Chavez. We are taking time to thoughtfully review and process what this means for our schools and community.We are evaluating all options regarding the name of Cesar Chavez Elementary. Any decision will be made with careful consideration and in the best interest of our students, staff, families, and community.We want to be clear that we deeply value and support farm workers and their families, as well as the ongoing efforts to advance dignity, equity, and fair working conditions. Those values remain central to who we are as a district.We remain committed to fostering safe, respectful, and inclusive learning environments for all. We will continue to advocate for and support our students, staff, and community as we move forward.
Cesar Chavez Elementary School is located in northeast Bakersfield.
In Kern County, there is also a Cesar E. Chavez High School in Delano. There is currently a petition to rename the school.
