BAKERSFIELD, Calif.(KBAK/KBFX) — The Bakersfield Police Department said it has developed a “comprehensive public safety plan” to keep the Bakersfield Marathon safe for runners, spectators, volunteers, and residents on Sunday, March 22.
BPD personnel will be placed throughout the race route to control traffic, enforce road closures, and secure the areas.

Multiple public safety partners will also be on site, such as the tactical response teams from the BPD and the Kern County Sheriff’s Office. Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS) teams will assist with aerial monitoring of the course and surrounding areas, and K-9 teams will work with detection and security operations, said police.
Kern County EMS and Fire personnel will be placed strategically along the race route to provide immediate medical response, if needed.

Police said GPS maps such as Waze, Google, and Apple Maps will deliver accurate, real-time navigation updates for the road on the day of the race.
The Bakersfield Marathon is set for this Sunday, March 22, starting at 7 a.m.

Approximately 5,000 runners are expected to participate in the marathon, half-marathon, 10k, and 6k runs.
