BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KBAK/KBFX) Cesar Chavez’s influence on Kern County and the nation has long been cemented through major recognitions and historic sites tied to his work.

Now, new allegations of sexual abuse involving Chavez are drawing national attention and raising questions about what the accusations could mean for the labor leader and civil rights activist’s legacy.

Chavez was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom posthumously in 1994 by President Bill Clinton.

In 2012, President Barack Obama signed a presidential proclamation creating the Cesar E. Chavez National Monument in Keene.

In 2021, First Lady Jill Biden visited the historic Forty Acre site, a former workplace of Chavez.

Dr. Oliver Rosales, a professor of history and ethnic studies at Bakersfield College, said Chavez and the movement he helped lead played a central role in Mexican American civil rights history.

“Cesar Chavez and the movement he helped lead, the farmers’ movement, is sort of the heart and soul of the Mexican American civil rights movement,” Rosales said.

Rosales said the movement helped drive changes that benefited farm workers who had been left out of key labor protections.

“It inspired not only reforms within labor law for farm workers who had been excluded from much of the New Deal era legislation that protected other workers,” he said.

Rosales said the recent accusations have prompted strong reactions, particularly among students and families with personal connections to Chavez’s legacy.

“There was collective shock. I mean, a lot of students went to Cesar Chavez High School, and their parents might’ve been involved in the union. Or they’ve gone to union celebrations celebrating the legacy of Cesar Chavez. So, they don’t necessarily know what to do with this information,” he said.

Despite the controversy, Rosales said it remains important to keep the broader farm worker movement in focus.

“So, what it underscores for me is the centrality – the importance of the farm worker movement. And how that story was always a story of a mass movement of people. It was never about an individual. It was a story of a movement of everyday people who made history,” he said.
