A shuttered Denny’s on Friars Road is being converted into a Chase Bank, city permit records confirm, despite another branch nearby.
SAN DIEGO — A familiar landmark in San Diego’s Grantville neighborhood is getting a new tenant, just not the kind many locals were hoping for.
The old Denny’s at 10430 Friars Road, which closed six to eight months ago, is set to become a bank, according to city permit applications.
A source associated with the property owner, Ferrary Family Land and Trust, confirms Chase Bank is likely the new tenant.Â
City of San Diego permit filings dating back to October describe the project as a change of use from restaurant to bank, including demolition, fit-out of partitions, storefront modifications and finishes. A right-of-way permit was filed this week.
The news hasn’t been welcomed by everyone in the neighborhood. Some residents said they were hoping for a restaurant or local shops.
“We need more regular shops and mom-and-pop deals, that’s what I miss in San Diego,” one neighbor said.
Others noted the location already sits near another bank and ATM, with a Chase branch roughly a half mile away on Mission Gorge Road.
A representative for the property confirmed the Chase Bank plans but said an opening timeline depends on permit approvals and completion of renovations. Chase was not available for comment.
