FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) — The Cesar Chavez statue at Fresno State has officially been removed following sexual assault allegations against the labor leader.

EDITOR’S NOTE: The video above is from a previous broadcast and will be updated.

The statue is gone less than a week after an initial bombshell report from the New York Times accusing Chavez of sexual abuse of women and minors.

The statue was quickly covered up earlier this week before being boarded up and ultimately taken down.

“I want to acknowledge that this moment is about more than any one individual person, as the issue has a layered complexity: Fundamentally, it’s about protecting one another; at the same time, it’s about forging community, promoting belonging, and thanking and dignifying the farmworkers whose hard work and sacrifice puts food on our table,” said Fresno State President Dr. Saúl Jiménez-Sandoval in a statement.

Numerous changes are being considered across the city regarding signs and other honors of Chavez.
