ROCHESTER, Mich. – In their final non-conference match of the season, Oakland will face Wayne State at the Duchene Athletic Facility on March 21 at 12 p.m. (EST).
In the team’s conference opener, the Golden Grizzlies (4-8, 1-0 HL) defeated Milwaukee (5-8, 0-1 HL) at home, 4-3. After dropping the doubles point, Oakland rallied to secure four singles victories and earn the conference win. Junior Edie Hammond swept her sets 6-0, 6-0, not allowing her opponent to score a single point in either set. Senior Tara Montreuil (6-1, 7-5) and freshman Oliwia Klimas (6-3, 6-4) also recorded straight-set wins before junior Emilia Jarvinen clinched the match with a 7-6(3), 6-3 victory on the No. 5 court.
On Wednesday, the Horizon League named Jarvinen the #HLTEN Singles Player of the Week for her match-clinching performance against the Panthers. Jarvinen and Hammond were also selected as the #HLTEN Doubles Team of the Week after their 6-2 win on the No. 1 court against Milwaukee. With the lone doubles victory of the match, the duo improved their regular-season record to 8-3, including a 6-1 mark on the top doubles court.
Oakland will face Wayne State for the second time this season, having previously competed in the Warriors’ doubles tournament in late October.
SCOUTING THE WARRIORS
Wayne State (3-4, 1-0 GLIAC) returns to competition after a week in Florida, where the team played three matches. During the trip, the Warriors went 0-3, most recently falling to then-No. 2 (now No. 1) Barry University (13-1, 3-0), 7-0.
At the Wayne State Doubles Tournament, the Warriors went 9-7 overall, while Oakland finished 4-6. The Golden Grizzlies went 1-2 against Wayne State, with Klimas and sophomore Martyna Piechowicz earning the lone doubles victory in the quarterfinals of the main draw, 6-1.
In last season’s regular-season meeting, the Warriors posted a 5-2 win in Detroit. Hammond and Jarvinen earned a 6-3 victory on the No. 1 doubles court, but the doubles point ultimately went to Wayne State. Although the Warriors claimed the match, the Golden Grizzlies battled throughout, with one doubles match and three singles sets going to tiebreaks, and two singles matches going to a third set, including Piechowicz’s 12-10 third-set win on the No. 5 court.
Overall, Wayne State holds a 9-2 advantage over Oakland and has won the last five meetings. The Golden Grizzlies’ last victory came in 2009, when they edged the Warriors, 5-4. The two programs are frequent opponents, having met in the regular season in 2002-03, 2008-12, and from 2024 to the present.
Results from the match will be posted on goldengrizzlies.com once completed.
