Reports of an apparent Google Fiber outage surfaced Friday, with users in San Francisco and elsewhere reporting service disruptions, according to the outage-tracking website Downdetector and posts on social media.

Downdetector data showed a sharp increase in complaints tied to Google Fiber around noon, a sign that at least some customers were experiencing connectivity issues. Because the site relies on user submissions, the reports did not necessarily reflect the full scope of any disruption.

“We are aware of an issue impacting your service at this time,” Google Fiber, an Alphabet-owned broadband service that operates in select U.S. cities, said in a statement on its website. “We have dispatched a technician to investigate and are working to restore service as soon as possible. We will provide updates as they become available, so there’s no need to contact us.”

Other third-party monitoring services showed scattered outage reports over the previous 24 hours, including in California, while indicating that the broader network remained largely operational.

The cluster of complaints in San Francisco suggested the problem was likely localized rather than a systemwide outage.

The cause of the disruption and the number of customers affected were not immediately clear.

The reports followed a separate internet disruption earlier in the week that affected multiple providers across the Bay Area and briefly interrupted service for thousands of users.

Customers experiencing issues were advised to check their provider’s outage page or restart their equipment while waiting for updates.
