San Francisco shattered its all-time March temperature record on Friday when the downtown weather station, located on Mint Hill near Duboce Park, hit 90 degrees just before 4 p.m.
It is the first-ever 90-degree reading in March, surpassing the previous record of 87 degrees set in 2005, and the city’s earliest 90-degree reading on record by more than two weeks.
The temperature values are considered preliminary until official confirmation by the NWS comes on Friday evening.Â
The new temperature record comes on the final day of an unprecedented March heat wave and the first day of spring. Several additional temperature records, including some monthly records, are likely to be set around the Bay Area, as Friday will be the hottest day of this multi-day stretch.Â
At 4 p.m., temperatures across the region ranged from the mid-80s to low 90s, a staggering 20 to 30 degrees above normal.Â
A cooldown is expected over the weekend as the ridge of high pressure responsible for the heat flattens and the marine layer works itself back into the city. San Francisco’s forecast high of 73 degrees on Saturday is nearly 20 degrees cooler than Friday’s high.
Temperatures across the region will be in the 70s and 80s on Saturday, before a further cooldown on Sunday with much of the region seeing temperatures in the 60s.Â
