Echo Park — A framed and sign picture that was taken from Taix French restaurant last night has been returned, according to an Instagram post.

“RETURNED at 5 pm!” said a post from Taix. “Thank you for doing the right thing! Hopefully the pink bathroom thieves also do the right thing!! Merci!!”

The restaurant had given the alleged souvenir-seeker a deadline between 5 pm and 10 pm tonight to return a picture from Eberle Winery, or else. In an earlier Instagram post, the nearly century-old restaurant that is scheduled to close for several years at the end of this month warned that the incident would otherwise be reported to police.

“We have your name and credit card info, a full face shot of you, witnesses who reported you and video footage from the room,” the posting stated. “To protect your privacy I am not showing that but this is not ok. You have until tomorrow (Friday night) to return this no questions asked.”

Owner Mike Taix had previously said that he was concerned about souvenir theft during the restaurant’s final weeks.

In an interview shortly before announcing the upcoming closure, Taix said he was planning to remove memorabilia and items from the walls, in part to decorate a future version of the restaurant but also “ensure that people don’t steal it. You know what happens when these places are closing.”

Two longtime Taix customers, Andrew Garsten and Helen McDonagh, said they heard the restaurant uses plain white dishes now because people were stealing the plates with the Taix logo.
