BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KBAK/KBFX) — The Delano Joint Union High School District stated it will be initiating a formal review of the name of Cesar E. Chavez High School amid the allegations against Chavez.
Cesar Chavez is accused of sexually abusing girls and women during the 1960s and 1970s.
In a statement, it said in part, “As a school district with a school bearing his name, we recognize the heightened concern within our campus community and the broader public. We are committed to approaching this matter thoughtfully and responsibly, with care for the impact on our students, staff, families, and community members.”
The statement said the district will be taking several steps to ensure they are responding appropriately and transparently. The steps include having support for survivors, reviewing the name of the Cesar Chavez High School, commitment to open communication, and maintaining a safe and respectful learning environment.
The district said it had no planned activities or celebrations related to the upcoming Cesar Chavez Day holiday due to the timing of Spring Break this calendar year.

The school district ended the statement saying, “We encourage our community to approach these discussions with empathy for survivors, sensitivity for students, and respect for the diverse experiences and perspectives within our District.”
