KENT, Ohio – San Diego State lacrosse came up just short against Kent State on the road, falling in an 11-10 decision on Sunday.  

The Aztecs are now 1-7 on the season while the Golden Flashes improve to 5-5.

Mia Maechtel led the way offensively with three goals, followed by Tate Stokesberry, who scored two goals and added two assists, two ground balls and four draw controls. Tatum Neach also put away two while Lilah Turley, Macie Buell and Barrett Doan had one goal each.

Sophia Miller put up a strong performance in the draw circle, matching her career high six draw controls.

Senior goalkeeper played all 60 minutes in the cage, recording five saves off 25 shots faced with 11 goals allowed.

Zayda Crumpton was Kent State’s leading scorer with four goals on the day. Lizzie Lundeen had three, Morgan Halli put two in the back of the net and Haleigh Greenberg and Peyton Gellin each scored one.

Sydney Davis also played the entirety of the game between the pipes, collecting 10 saves off 25 shots faced with 10 goals allowed.

San Diego State jumped out to a 5-1 lead by the end of the first period with goals by Stokesberry, Maechtel, Turley and Neach. The Golden Flashes outscored the Aztecs 3-1 in the second period, leaving San Diego State with a 6-4 lead at halftime. After a scoring run from Kent State in the fourth period, led by Crumpton with three goals, the Aztecs and Golden Flashes were tied 10-10 with 36 seconds left on the clock. Greenberg then put one away at the buzzer to seal an 11-10 victory.

The Aztecs return to action on Sunday against Akron on the road at 9 a.m. PT.
