BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KBAK/KBFX) — Authorities executed a warrant at a Lake Hughes property, rescuing 700 dogs and cats in what may be the largest animal seizure case in U.S. history. Kern County Animal Services is assisting.

The Los Angeles County Department of Animal Care and Control (DACC) served a search warrant in the 46000 block of 266th Street West in Lake Hughes for a violation of animal welfare laws.

DACC said it is estimated there were 700 dogs and cats on the property that will be rescued.

In a press release, it said more than 70 animal care and control staff were at the scene.

DACC was assisted by Kern County Animal Services, spcaLA, and Pasadena Humane.

The release said, “This is the largest number of dogs and cats that DACC has ever seized and may be the largest case ever in the United States.”

The animals are being triaged at the scene by veterinary medical staff. The animals that require emergency medical care will be taken to vet hospitals. The other animals will be taken to DACC animal care centers for evaluations and care.

DACC said the animals were in custody of Christine De Anda of ‘Rock N Pawz’ animal rescue.
