OAKLAND — A 29-year-old man was stabbed multiple times in downtown Friday morning and a suspect was later arrested, authorities said.
Despite sustaining more than a half-dozen wounds to his neck and chest area, the victim was in stable condition at a hospital, authorities said.
The stabbing was reported about 8:55 a.m. Friday outside in the 1300 block of Broadway, a short distance from City Hall.
According to initial police reports, the victim was confronted by a 45-year-old man he did not know; the stabbing was preceded by an unspecified verbal dispute. The confrontation was captured on video surveillance in the area, authorities said.
The suspect fled on foot and the victim was transported to a hospital.
Using the surveillance video and other information, police located the suspect a short time later at his apartment building in the 1400 block of Harrison Street and arrested him. A pocket knife believed used in the attack was recovered, authorities said.
The suspect, whose name was not immediately released, was booked at Santa Rita Jail on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon.
