A man was shot and killed in downtown Fresno on Friday.

Fresno police responded to the shooting at 11:15 p.m. In the 700 block of Fulton Street, and found a man in his 40s lying on the roadway with multiple gunshot wounds to the upper torso.

He was taken to a local hospital and pronounced dead.

According to Fresno Police Lt. Michael Pierce, a large gathering for a party just south of Inyo on Fulton had turned violent before shots were fired.

Officers spoke with multiple witnesses, who are cooperating.

“We’re gathering information on who did this,” Pierce said. “We do not have any threat to the public that we know of.”

Police do not know whether the suspect arrived or fled on foot or by vehicle. Officers contacted as many as 50 people in an effort to learn more about the shooting.

Detectives are canvassing for surveillance video to determine what led up to the shooting.

Officers are expected to remain in the area for several hours.

The annual FresYes event is scheduled to take place at 1 p.m. Saturday at Fulton Street between Mono and Tulare.

Pierce said police will provide information Saturday morning regarding any road closures related to the investigation..
