In a city obsessed with the next big thing, some places proudly hold their ground for 99 years. But next week, this culinary legend on Sunset Boulevard will be closing for good. Taix French Restaurant’s last day to enjoy its iconic menu will be March 28, 2026.
The main courses, or Plats Principaux, showcase classic French dishes. Options include roast chicken ($24) and the house burger with brandy & black pepper aioli, served on a brioche bun with French fries ($19). For a full traditional French experience, you can try frog legs Provençal ($32), escargots de Bourgogne ($23), or duck à l’orange ($32).
Taix, L.A.s’ oldest French restaurant
Taix was founded in 1927 by the Taix family, originally from the Hautes-Alpes region of France, and had been part of L.A.’s cultural fabric since the late 19th century before opening the restaurant downtown. Over time, it became a staple for traditional French cuisine, serving generations of Angelenos.
During Prohibition, Taix built its reputation in part by serving wine under the guise of “medicinal” purposes, a workaround that helped keep the business alive. In 1962, the restaurant relocated to Echo Park, where it evolved into a larger, more formal space known as Les Frères Taix, run by the founders’ sons.
