A motorcyclist was killed in a collision with a bicyclist along the San Gabriel River Trail in Long Beach on Friday night, March 20, police said.

Officers responded around 8:15 p.m. to the trail south of the 405 Freeway following reports of a crash, the Long Beach Police Department said.

When officers arrived, they found two men receiving aid from bystanders. Both were taken to a hospital in critical condition, and the motorcyclist later died from his injuries.

Police said the motorcyclist had been traveling southbound on the trail when he collided head-on with a bicyclist riding in the opposite direction. Both men were ejected and suffered severe injuries.

Witnesses told investigators the motorcyclist was traveling at a high rate of speed and did not have a helmet or lights. Police said impairment and distracted driving are not believed to be factors in the crash.

The identity of the motorcyclist was not immediately available. The condition of the bicyclist was also not immediately known Saturday afternoon.
