SACRAMENTO — San Diego softball (12-15, 0-0 WCC) dropped the opener of Saturday’s doubleheader at Sacramento State (19-10, 0-0 Big Sky) by a 5-1 margin to the Hornets at Shea Stadium.
San Diego grabbed an early lead in the first when Kaitlyn Wynia drew a leadoff walk and moved to third on a pair of wild pitches. Michelle Delgado then took off for second, and when the catcher’s throw missed the mark, Wynia came around to score and give USD an early 1-0 lead.Â
Charlie Johnson kept it there through four innings before Sacramento State took the lead in the fifth on a solo home run and added three more in the sixth — capped by a two-run shot — to put the game away.Â
Johnson pitched five innings and allowed two earned runs before giving way to the bullpen. The Toreros managed just two hits on the afternoon, one each from Mallory Axline and Hailey Mulligan.
