Police are continuing to investigate a deadly shooting that left a man dead in downtown Fresno on Friday night.

Officers responded to reports of multiple gunshots around 11:15 p.m. near Fulton and Inyo streets. When they arrived, they found a man in his 40s lying in the street with multiple gunshot wounds to his upper body.

He was taken to Community Regional Medical Center, where he was later pronounced dead.

Authorities have not yet released the victim’s name as they continue investigating what marks the city’s second deadly shooting in two days.

The violence occurred just hours before a major downtown event.

According to event organizer Mike (Oz) Osegueda, the annual FresYes Festival proceeded on Saturday with heightened security.

Osegueda said the event — a longtime downtown block party celebrating local food, vendors, and music — already had a security plan in place, including contracted police officers. Following the shooting, additional officers were assigned to patrol the area.

Police confirmed officers are monitoring the event after police chief Mindy Casto worked with the southwest commander and “we re-allocated resources to provide 20 officers assigned to the FresYes event while still maintaining adequate resources for calls for service for the rest of the city.”

Osegueda described waking up to the news as “a shock,” adding that organizers immediately began coordinating with police to ensure the investigation could proceed without interference.

“We understand that a murder investigation is a much bigger deal than our festival,” Osegueda said. “We wanted to make sure police had every opportunity to process the scene and do what they needed to do.”

Parts of Fulton Street remained closed Saturday morning as investigators worked the scene, forcing organizers to consider alternate layouts for the event.

Eventually, authorities cleared the area, allowing the festival to proceed.

Osegueda noted that while the event has faced challenges in past years — such as weather concerns — this was the first time organizers had dealt with a situation of this magnitude.

Despite the circumstances, he emphasized the importance of community and safety, adding that an increased police presence was intended to reassure attendees.

Officers were seen patrolling regularly throughout the event.

Police have not announced any arrests, and the investigation remains ongoing.
