LA JOLLA, Calif. — UC San Diego baseball fell to UC Riverside, 9-4, on Saturday afternoon in Triton Ballpark. The Tritons (8-11, 4-0 Big West) were unable to overcome a five-run fifth inning for the Highlanders (7-15, 2-3 Big West).
 
Nick Costello led the offensive efforts with a two-run home run, while Michael Crossland added two hits, including a double and also drawing a walk. J.C. Allen contributed with two hits and an RBI in his five plate appearances.
  
Starter Nic Gregson (0-5) struck out seven over 4.2 innings, allowing seven hits and only one earned run, though he faced challenges with six total runs in that span. Jake Villar delivered a strong performance for the Tritons, pitching 2.0 innings in relief without allowing a run or a walk while striking out three batters and conceding just one hit. Connor Etnire contributed 1.1 innings, maintaining a clean sheet with no runs and one hit against him, while inducing three groundouts.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
UC San Diego opened the scoring in the second inning when Trevian Martinez singled down the right-field line and Costello followed with a two-run homer to right field, giving the Tritons a 2-0 lead. 
 
In the third inning, Crossland doubled down the left-field line and later scored on an Allen single to right center, extending the lead to 3-0. However, UCR responded with a run of their own with an RBI double, bringing the score to 3-1. 
 
The Highlanders took command in the fifth inning, scoring five unearned runs on a combination of singles, a double, and errors, putting them ahead 6-3. The Tritons narrowed the gap in the sixth inning when Addison Klepsch scored on a throwing error, making it 6-4. 
 
UC Riverside added three more runs in the seventh inning with three consecutive singles and an RBI double, pushing the lead to 9-4.

UC San Diego left 12 runners on base, compared to six for UC Riverside.
The Tritons used four pitchers in the contest, including Nic Gregson, Connor Etnire, Julian Cazares and Jake Villar.
