PHOTOJOURNALIST MIKE CARROLL TAKES US TO THE CELEBRATIONS. WEST SAC. IT’S HOME, IT’S BASEBALL IS WEST SAC. I GREW UP IN WEST SACRAMENTO, SO PLAYING BASEBALL HERE WAS REALLY PART OF YOUR CHILDHOOD? ALL YOUR FRIENDS PLAYED THE NEW SEASON OF WEST SACRAMENTO. LITTLE LEAGUE BASEBALL HAS NOW OFFICIALLY TAKEN OFF. WEST SACRAMENTO LOVES THEIR SPORTS AND PARENTS LOVE WATCHING THEIR KIDS DOING SPORTS. YOU GOT TO MEET KIDS THAT YOU DIDN’T GO TO SCHOOL WITH BECAUSE YOU KNOW YOU WERE ON THEIR TEAM OR YOU PLAYED AGAINST THEM. SO YOU KIND OF GOT TO KNOW A LOT OF THE KIDS IN TOWN WITH PARADE OF THEIR NEW AND RETURNING 600 PLAYERS. I THINK IT’S THE BEST THING THAT I EVER WENT TO BECAUSE IT’S COOL. LIKE I LIKE CATCHING THE BALL, HITTING A WEST SACRAMENTO INSTITUTION, CELEBRATING THE START OF THEIR 73RD SEASON. IT’S DEFINITELY AN INSTITUTION. THEY REMODELED THE BASEBALL PARK, WHICH IT DEFINITELY NEEDED THAT. I THINK ABOUT 50 TEAMS ALL TOGETHER AT THE DIFFERENT LEVELS, GOING FROM T BALL ALL THE WAY UP TO OUR 1415 YEAR OLDS AND SENIORS. IT’S FASCINATING AND FUN. I WAS JUST TALKING TO MY WIFE ABOUT HOW THIS IS HOW A COMMUNITY SHOULD BEHAVE WHEN IT COMES TO OUR KIDS. IT’S A BEAUTIFUL THING. A BASEBALL LEAGUE THAT OFFICIALLY STARTED PLAYING IN 1953. THEY GET LIFE SKILLS, YOU KNOW, THEY LEARN HOW TO WORK TOGETHER, BE CHALLENGED BY THINGS THAT YOU CAN’T DO EASILY RIGHT AWAY. YOU KNOW, BASEBALL IS A TOUGH SPORT TO PLAY. SO SO THEY’RE LEARNING HOW TO OVERCOME CHALLENGES AT A YOUNG AGE. BUT I THINK, WHICH I THINK WILL TEACH THEM HOW TO BE RESILIENT, AN INSTITUTION LONGER IN EXISTENCE THAN EVEN THE CITY OF WEST SACRAMENTO, WHICH DID NOT COME INTO BEING UNTIL 1987. WHAT I LIKE ABOUT IT IS BECAUSE. THERE’S A LOT OF FRIENDS TO BACK YOU UP. GREAT. WOO! IN WES
