FRESNO, Calif. (FOX26) — Law enforcement wants to remind the public of the safety rules of e-bikes and e-scooters.
Assembly Bill 1942, or the e-Bike Accountability Act, could require more regulations for operating e-bikes and e-scooters.
The bill was introduced by Assembly Member Rebecca Bower Kahan.
The updated rules would require class 2 and class 3 riders to have special license plates registered at the DMV.
They would also need proof of ownership of the bike, which, if not complied with, could lead to fines and impounding.
Current rules mean riders could face fines or have their property seized if not operated correctly.
Riders under the age of 18 must wear a helmet when riding on the street, bikeway, or public path.
A class 3 e-bike requires a helmet for all riders.
All e-bike and e-scooter batteries need to meet lab safety standards.
All e-bikes must have a rear reflector or rear light with a reflector.
Any e-bike that has been illegally altered could be impounded.
These also include mini bikes, which can be referred to as pocket bikes or mini motorcycles.
Mini bikes are illegal to operate on all public streets, sidewalks, and trails, and can be impounded if found parked in public.
