PEORIA, Ariz. — The Padres lost to the Diamondbacks 11-1 on Sunday night at Peoria Stadium.
Batter’s box: Gavin Sheets’ home run in the fourth inning was his third in four games and the Padres’ first hit of the game. Sheets’ single in the seventh inning was the Padres’ second hit of the game. … Luis Campusano and Jase Bowen singled in the eighth. Clay Dungan doubled in the ninth. Bowen’s hit tied him with Ty France and Nick Solak for the team lead.
Balls and strikes: Walker Buehler, who is in the starting rotation, had his worst outing of the spring. He allowed four home runs, including two by Gabriel Moreno, and seven runs in all while working 3⅓ innings. Buehler, who will likely start the fourth game of the season, threw 79 pitches. … Wandy Peralta worked his fifth scoreless inning of the spring. The left-hander also worked two scoreless innings for the Dominican Republic in the World Baseball Classic. … Matt Waldron, who will begin the season on the injured list after having a procedure to alleviate an infection earlier in the spring, worked two scoreless innings in 23 pitches before yielding four runs in his third inning. … Ron Marinaccio, who is in the running for a bullpen spot, worked a scoreless inning. He allowed one run in five Cactus League innings and one run in 2⅓ innings for Italy in the WBC.
Extra bases: Fernando Tatis Jr. batted leadoff for the first time this spring. The Diamondbacks started a right-hander, which has recently meant Jake Cronenworth atop the order. … France, primarily a first baseman, played second for the second day in a row. He has played one inning there since the end of the 2021 season, but he will begin the season as the backup to Jake Cronenworth while Sung-Mun Song is on the injured list. … The game was moved from the afternoon because Sunday was the fifth consecutive day of record heat in the Phoenix area. It was 94 degrees at first pitch, seven degrees cooler than the afternoon high.
On deck: Right-hander Germán Márquez, who is likely going to be the fifth starter, will start against the Mariners, 12:10 p.m. PT at Peoria Stadium. Bradgley Rodriguez, Jason Adam and Kyle Hart are also scheduled to pitch in the spring training finale.
