Overview

The Tenderloin has been San Francisco’s vice district, a refuge for the country’s young LGBTQ youth, a landing point for immigrants, and has fiercely upheld protections that allow low-income residents to keep living in this gentrifying city.

This small urban enclave tucked between Union Square and City Hall is often the talk of the town — and the country. The Tenderloin is home to the highest concentration of children in San Francisco, its restaurants serve an impressive range of cuisines, and many of the city’s most successful social services originate here.
