BAKERSFIELD, Calif.(KBAK/KBFX) — City officials said staff recently noticed a mistake that affected about 30% of residents not receiving a notice proposing increases to sewer rates.

Prop 218 notices sent out on March 6, 2026, did not get sent to around 30% of addresses, said the city. The city mailed the proper notices to those addresses during the week of March 16.

Under the proposal, the city would increase the sewer rate to $475 in year one, then raise it by $100 each year, reaching $875 by year five. If more than half of the property owners submit written protests, the rate hike cannot move forward.

The initial plan to raise rates by almost 300% was cancelled in 2025 by the city.

Residents who are now notified will have two opportunities to attend public hearings on April 22 and May 13, to share their thoughts and concerns before the Bakersfield City Council makes a final decision on May 13, 2026.

The City stated in part:

Residents can attend either meeting to speak during public comment. Written opposition letters will also be accepted at the City Clerk’s Office at City Hall North, 1600 Truxtun Ave., or during the Council meeting May 13.Comment with Bubbles
