Two of the nation’s most successful softball programs are neighbors in San Marcos.

Cal State San Marcos is 28-3 and second in the NCAA Division II rankings, while Palomar College is 22-1 and averaging 10.6 runs a game.

CSUSM last weekend swept a pair of doubleheaders against San Francisco State.

Shortstop Jillian Albayati is hitting .553 with nine homers and 46 RBIs, while third baseman Zoe Karam is hitting .304 with seven home runs and 33 RBIs. Center fielder Czar Fleischman is hitting .312 with five home runs and 23 RBIs.

CSUSM’s two leading pitchers have combined for 21 wins. Jordan Hill is 10-2 with a 0.90 earned run average and Daleah Cardenas is 11-0 with a 1.13 ERA. Karam was named the California Collegiate Athletic Association player of the week for homering in three of the four games last week.

Palomar College, meanwhile, is riding a 10-game winning streak. Infielder Alexis Huey (Poway High School) is hitting .578 with 14 homers and 40 RBIs. Infielder Kristina Deal (West Hills High School) is hitting .523 with seven home runs and 32 RBIs, while utility player Lauren Doepping is hitting .440 with nine homers and 33 RBIs.

Comets ace pitcher Kiara Flaviani (La Costa Canyon High) is  20-1 with a 1.83 ERA. She has been a key reason why Palomar has a three-game lead over Mesa College (18-7, 5-3) in the Pacific Coast Athletic Conference standings.

Baseball, too

San Marcos is also home to two of the area’s more successful baseball teams.

Cal State San Marcos is off to a 17-6 start after winning three of four games at Chico State.

The Cougars are paced by freshman outfielders Canon King (.328), Zech Samayoa (.321) and Jacob Embleton (Grossmont College; .333) and infielder Steven Espinoza (.357).

Pitcher PJ Wendler is 5-0 with a 2.43 ERA.

Palomar College (21-3, 10-0) defeated Grossmont College (16-9, 8-2) twice last week by scores of 21-12 and 12-6 in head-to-head games for the PCAC lead.

First baseman Michael Rodda went 5-for-11 in the two games with a double, two home runs and 11 RBIs. Designated hitter Elijah Stephens (Sage Creek High) was 8-for-11 with four RBIs, while center fielder Justin Tucker (Grossmont High) was 4-for-8 with five RBIs. Infielder Preston Conklin (Patrick Henry High) was 5-for-9 with six RBIs.

More baseball

Point Loma Nazarene University (27-4, 23-1) is ranked fourth among the nation’s Division II baseball teams after winning three of four games from Azusa Pacific. The Sea Lions lead the PacWest Conference by 6½ games.

• San Diego State (12-13, 2-1) lost 7-4 to No. 13 USC to start a 1-4 week that ended two extra-inning losses at San Jose State.

• The USD (8-14, 1-2) lost two of three to West Coast Conference rival Gonzaga at home.

• UC San Diego (9-11) is 5-1 in Big West play after winning two of three from UC Riverside at home.

More softball

San Diego State (18-13, 3-3) lost two of three games at UNLV. USD (13-16) lost two of three at Sacramento State, and will open West Coast Conference play this weekend at Oregon State. UC San Diego (12-18, 2-7) was swept at Cal State Fullerton.

Women’s golf

San Diego State’s Ema Narita finished 13th among individuals with a 3-under-par 213 and the Aztecs were 12th among the team scoring at the Mountain View Collegiate Tournament in Tucson.

Men’s golf

San Diego State finished 12th in the Pauma Valley Invitational with Kai Hirayama (3-under 210) being the top Aztec individual in a tie for 14th. Aztec Harry Takis, who slipped from first to third in the national scoreboard rankings last week, finished in a tie for 16th with a 2-under 211.

Women’s water polo

Mimi Stoupas scored 10 goals in four games as 13th-ranked San Diego State went 3-1 in the Aztec Invitational. She also had five steals and a block.

Women’s lacrosse

San Diego State’s Keira Doyle-Odenbach scored six goals and Molly Jacobson added four as the Aztecs scored a 14-13 victory on Sunday at Akron.
