Lake Orion’s Shelby McCumber Announced as Oakland County Elementary Teacher of the Year
(LOCS, March 23, 2026)
Lake Orion, MI – Lake Orion Community Schools staff members continue to be honored for their work.
Orion Oaks teacher Shelby McCumber was announced Thursday as the Oakland County Elementary Teacher of the Year. She was celebrated by students, staff and family members, as Oakland Schools Superintendent Ken Gutman was on hand to make the presentation.
This is the third consecutive year an LOCS staff member was celebrated as the county teacher of the year as Ms. McCumber joins Lake Orion High School teacher Erik Meerschaert (2025) and Orion Oaks colleague Norman Wright (2024).
“The surprise of winning Teacher of the Year of Oakland Schools makes me feel so honored and grateful for this job,” McCumber said. “I put my heart and soul into it every day and I want to be here and help the kids. The fact that people are seeing the heart and soul that goes into it makes me feel really great.”
She will be honored at a county-wide celebration in May.
