On May 17, 2025, at approximately 9:33 AM, San José Police Department Patrol Officers responded to a report of an unattended death at a residence in the1200 block of Mastic Street in the city of San José. Upon arrival, Officers located a 40-year-old male with a developmental disability who was not conscious and not breathing. The preliminary investigation revealed the descendent was emaciated and lacked basic necessities, prompting Officers to suspect neglect. The Santa Clara County Office of the Medical Examiner took custody of the body to conduct an investigation into the manner of death.
On August 29, 2025, SJPD Homicide Unit Detectives were notified by the Office of the Medical Examiner that the manner of death was ruled a homicide due to neglect. Detectives began a comprehensive investigation and identified the victim’s in-home caretaker, 69-year-old Enid Acevedo, as the primary suspect. Detectives obtained a warrant for Suspect Acevedo’s arrest.
On March 18, 2026, with the assistance of the SJPD Covert Response Unit, Detectives located and arrested Suspect Acevedo in the city of Gilroy. Suspect Acevedo was booked into Santa Clara County Main Jail for homicide and later charged for felony abuse of a dependent adult resulting in death.
The circumstances surrounding the incident are still under investigation.
This incident is being investigated as the City’s 27th homicide of 2025.
