(FOX40.COM) — The Sacramento Superior Court is warning residents about a phone scam in which callers falsely claim to be law enforcement officers and demand money to secure the release of a loved one from the Sacramento County Main Jail.

Court officials said the scammers instruct victims to send money through the mobile payment app Venmo, promising to help facilitate a release. Authorities emphasized on Facebook that the claims are fraudulent and urged the public not to comply.

“This is a scam,” the court said in a statement, advising anyone who receives such a call to hang up immediately and avoid sending money or sharing personal information.

Officials stressed that legitimate law enforcement officers will never request payment over the phone, threaten arrest for failing to pay, or ask for personal or financial information in this manner.

The court encouraged residents to remain vigilant and report suspicious calls to local authorities.
