Chavez fallout
El Sereno— LAUSD Board of Education members whose districts include schools named for César Chávez are calling for those campuses to be renamed, LAist reported, after a New York Times article accused the late labor leader of sexually abusing girls and women, including Dolores Huerta, co-founder of the United Farm Workers.
The board is scheduled to vote today on a resolution by Kelly Gonez and Rocio Rivas supporting survivors of sexual abuse and violence and beginning the renaming process for César Chávez Elementary in El Sereno. Some parents, including Blanca Juarez, whose child attends the school, say it is too soon to discuss a name change.
Strikes looming
United Teachers Los Angeles and SEIU Local 99, representing thousands of teachers and support workers, say they will strike on April 14 if contract talks with the district fail to produce new agreements, the L.A. times reported. District leaders said a strike would shut down schools. UTLA’s contract expired in June, and SEIU Local 99’s expired in June 2024. Both unions are pushing for higher wages, while district officials say their pay proposals are fair and that meeting union demands would further destabilize already shaky finances.
