A San Francisco restaurant responded Monday to a photo circulating on social media that showed pounds of raw meat left outside the shop during an unseasonably warm weekend.

The photo showed packaged raw beef and a jar of mayonnaise on the pavement outside Hamburger Project’s Mission District location.

Joven works at a corner store across the street. He said he saw the delivery driver knock for a bit, but the restaurant was closed.

Joven told the delivery driver he could leave the meat and mayonnaise with him, but the delivery driver said he wasn’t allowed to do that. Joven said that’s when the delivery driver left the raw meat on the sidewalk outside the restaurant and sent the owner a message saying he didn’t have time to wait.

The owner told NBC Bay Area he was horrified. He said the restaurant ran out of meat because of a busier than usual Friday and Saturday, likely because of the warm weather.

Since he was out of town, he ordered more via Instacart. He said the delivery arrived early, before any of his employees showed up.

An Instacart spokesperson said the delivery was made within the customer’s selected delivery window and the driver made attempts to communicate with the customer upon arrival.

When workers did arrive more than half an hour later, Hamburger Project said they tossed the products.

The restaurant issued a statement, saying in part, “We take food safety extremely seriously and have already updated our delivery procedures to ensure this does not happen again.”
