BERKELEY, Calif. (KGO) — UC Berkeley is facing backlash over its plans to pay $1 million to settle a lawsuit alleging it failed to protect Jewish students from antisemitism.
Two Jewish groups filed the lawsuit following protests in response to the Israel-Hamas war in 2023.
Attorneys representing those groups are asking a judge to reject the settlement and allow the case to go to trial.
“This settlement will make it impossible for the students on the Berkeley campus who we represent to speak openly and freely,” attorney Shanta Driver said.

The settlement requires UC Berkeley to implement mandatory anti-discrimination training.
A university spokesperson says the settlement builds upon work already underway to combat antisemitism.
