Long Beach police are investigating the fatal shooting of a man early Saturday morning in the 100 block of La Verne Avenue, authorities said.

Officers responded around 1:39 a.m. to reports of gunfire in the area, according to a news release from the Long Beach Police Department. When they arrived, officers found a man suffering from gunshot wounds and began providing medical aid until Long Beach Fire Department personnel arrived. The victim was pronounced dead at the scene.

Detectives said the shooting followed an altercation among a group of people, which stemmed from an earlier incident at a local bar. During the confrontation outside on La Verne Avenue, a man allegedly pulled out a firearm and shot the victim before fleeing the scene in a vehicle, police said.

The identity of the victim is being withheld pending notification of next of kin by the Los Angeles County Department of the Medical Examiner.
