BATAVIA, Ohio – For the first time since 2017, the Oakland women’s golf team captured both the team and individual titles at the same invitational, as junior Olivia Hemmila was crowned the individual champion and the Golden Grizzlies won the NKU Julie Invitational.
Oakland’s last individual champion before Hemmila was current Baylor golfer Bridget Boczar, who won the 2024 Horizon League Championship title with an eight-over 227. That season, Boczar also secured two additional individual titles at the A-Ga-Ming Invitational (206, -10) and the Chippewa Invitational (143, -1).
While the Golden Grizzlies have won back-to-back Horizon League Championship titles, their most recent regular-season team victory before this week came at the 2023 Shirley Spork EMU Invitational, where they posted an eight-over 872. Later that year, Oakland was named co-champion with UIC at the 2024 Nevel Meade Collegiate (626, +50).
Earning both a team and individual title at the same event is a rare feat for the program. Oakland last achieved it in spring 2017 at the Fort Wayne Spring Classic, when the team recorded an 895 (+43), the first sub-900 total in a 54-hole tournament in program history. Morgan Smith won the individual title with a 222 (+9), the second-lowest 54-hole score in program history at the time.
Hemmila led wire-to-wire across all three rounds before being officially crowned champion on Tuesday, securing her first collegiate victory. Her 221 (+7) marks her best 54-hole total of the season and her fifth top-20 finish. She led the field in par-three scoring average (2.75), ranked in the top three in pars (35) and birdies (7), and finished inside the top 10 in par-four (4.31) and par-five (5.00) scoring averages.
Right behind her was junior Lily Bargamian, who tied for second at 224 (+10). After the first two rounds, she shared the 36-hole lead with Hemmila at two-over par and stayed close throughout the tournament. Bargamian tied for the second-best par-four average (4.19) and total birdies made (7), and posted top-10 marks in par-three scoring average (3.08) and pars made (33).
Freshman Logan Bentley tied for 14th, matching her career-best 54-hole score of 234 (+20). She produced the only eagle of the tournament, holing out the par-four 14th in two strokes during the final round — her second straight invitational with the field’s lone eagle. Bentley also finished in the top five in birdies made (6) and par-four scoring average (4.25).
Senior Grace Boczar finished one stroke back, tying for 16th at 235 (+21). She ranked inside the top 13 in both par-five scoring average (5.20) and pars made (30).
Competing as an individual, freshman Channing Hagen recorded her best finish of the season, tying for 25th with a 240 (+26). She opened with a career-low 76 (+5), bettering her previous best round by three strokes. Senior Paige Scott rounded out Oakland’s lineup with a 247 (+33), delivering steady play across all three rounds.
As a whole, the Golden Grizzlies led the field in pars made (155) and par-three scoring average (3.25), finished second in birdies made (23) and par-four scoring average (4.40), and tied for second in par-five scoring average (5.24).
Among Horizon League programs, Green Bay placed second at 936 (+80), followed by Northern Kentucky and IU Indianapolis in a tie for third at 942 (+86). Purdue Fort Wayne finished ninth, while Detroit Mercy tied for 10th.
