A major decision is about to shape West Hollywood’s future, and it’s happening this week.
The Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority is preparing to vote on the K Line Northern Extension, a project that could finally bring long-awaited rail service into West Hollywood and reshape how the city connects to the rest of Los Angeles.
🗺️ What’s Proposed
The San Vicente–Fairfax alignment has been proposed as the leading option. The city of West Hollywood says, “Only the San Vicente-Fairfax route would serve all the top destinations and job centers along the way.“
According to Metro, this route would generate around 60,000 daily trips, the highest of any option, and provide access to 125,000+ jobs within walking distance of stations.
For a city that has never had its own rail stop, the impact would be significant.
“The San Vicente-Fairfax route will put more than 125,000 jobs within a half mile of new Metro stations with connections to four other rail lines and 6 of the 10 busiest Metro bus lines,” said City of West Hollywood Mayor John Heilman. “With more riders, more jobs, and more destinations, the choice is simple: San Vicente-Fairfax is the best route. Let’s finish the line!”
⚖️ Why It Matters
Supporters say the project would:
Close a major gap in the rail network
Improve access to jobs, culture, and nightlife
Reduce congestion and support long-term sustainability
Metro maintains that years of study show minimal surface disruption and has pledged mitigation measures.
📣 How to Speak Up
The next meeting is Thursday, March 26 at Metro Headquarters in DTLA. This is the final stretch in decision making, and public input still matters.
Here’s how to get involved:
🎤 Speak live at the meeting — the most direct way to influence decision-makers
✍️ Submit written comments ahead of time
📞 Call in during the meeting to share your perspective
👥 Attend in person to show visible community support or concern
The City of West Hollywood is also offering a free shuttle from West Hollywood Park to help residents attend.
Even a short comment becomes part of the official record and can shape how board members vote.
🌆 The Bigger Picture
With an estimated cost approaching $15 billion, this is the most ambitious and expensive option on the table. But it’s also the one with the greatest projected impact.
Timing matters, too. Local leaders are exploring financing strategies tied to future development, meaning delays could affect billions in potential investment.
The metro decision this week will shape how Angelenos move, where development happens, and how L.A. neighborhoods evolve for generations.
