A recent guest speaker for the Coronado Optimists was Sharon Hollander, President of the Sharp Coronado Hospital Auxiliary. Sharon brings over 50 years of experience as a nurse and hospital administrator to her leadership role with the Auxiliary.
The Sharp Coronado Hospital, which is non-profit, was funded by the community in 1970 and started serving the community with no debt on its books. Today, the hospital is part of the Sharp Hospital system, which is the largest hospital system in San Diego, employing over 20,000 people with four acute care hospitals and three specialty hospitals.
Sharp Hospital is a Planetree-associated hospital. Planetree is a non-profit organization that works with hospitals to implement their “person-centered care model.” Speaking from personal experience, it greatly improves the hospitalization experience as a patient. Sharp Coronado is one of twelve hospitals nationwide that have achieved the Planetree Gold Certification. Bottom line: we have a wonderful health care facility right here on the island without having to cross the bridge.
The Coronado Hospital Auxiliary, started in 1958, has a volunteer family of over 130 men and women who generously share their time and skills with our hospital and community. The primary role of the auxiliary is to help round out the sharp edges of life in a busy hospital environment by providing services that are immediately responsive to patient needs. Volunteers provide unexpected services that are welcomed by patients and families.
