As expected, a number of injuries have opened spots on the Padres’ opening day roster.
Right-handers Jason Adam (left quad), Griffin Canning (left Achilles), Bryan Hoeing (elbow), Joe Musgrove (elbow) and Matt Waldron (hemorrhoid surgery) will begin the season on the 15-day injured list, as will left-hander Yuki Matsui (left groin). Infielders Sung-Mun Song and Will Wagner, both nursing right oblique strains, will open the season on the 10-day injured list.
Those moves, as well as placing rehabbing right-hander Yu Darvish on the restricted list as he considers his long-term future with the organization, cleared the way for the team to select the contracts of right-hander Walker Buehler and infielder Ty France, both of whom won jobs after beginning spring training on minor league deals.
Darvish underwent surgery on his right UCL and flexor tendon in October, wiping out the 2026 season. It is an open question whether the 39-year-old will pitch again for the Padres despite being under contract through 2028.
Here is the entirety of the Padres’ opening day roster:
RHPs (10): Walker Buehler, Jeremiah Estrada, Michael King, Ron Marinaccio, Germán Márquez, Mason Miller, David Morgan, Nick Pivetta, Bradgley Rodriguez, Randy Vásquez
LHPs (3): Kyle Hart, Adrián Morejón, Wandy Peralta
Cs (2): Luis Campusano, Freddy Fermin
INFs (7): Miguel Andujar, Xander Bogaerts, Nick Castellanos, Jake Cronenworth, Ty France, Manny Machado, Gavin Sheets
OFs (4): Bryce Johnson, Ramón Laureano, Jackson Merrill, Fernando Tatis Jr.
