A woman was rescued from a cliff face overlooking Ocean Beach on Wednesday afternoon, fire authorities said.

At around 4 p.m, the San Francisco Fire Department responded to a report of a woman “stuck on the rocks” near the northernmost stairwell of Ocean Beach, said department spokesperson Ken Smith.

The rescue unfolded at a scenic point near the tip of the beach, where rocky cliffs slope sharply up to Sutro Heights Park. Aerial footage from KCRA shows a helmeted rescuer being lowered by a rope to reach a woman about halfway down a sheer cliff, waves crashing below her.

“We think maybe she got up there to take a picture and ended up going over,” Smith said, although he said it was unclear whether the woman fell or climbed down the cliff. “It’s a precarious spot.”

Falling debris from the cliffs hindered rescue efforts, he said, prompting crews to move slowly. By 4:50 p.m., the woman had been safely pulled up from the cliff and was being evaluated by medical personnel, Smith said. She was not injured.
