The Giants defense has been up and down tonight. Harrison Bader made a good sliding play in center on a ball with a .340 expected batting average from Trent Grisham, and Jung Hoo Lee just snagged a liner from Austin Wells that had a .530 xBA, but Luis Arraez let a thirty-hopper with a .110 xBA go by to score two runs, and they’ve thrown the ball around a little on the infield.
This mirrors expectations so far, to be honest. Patrick Bailey is one of the two, three best defenders in the league, and Bader, Matt Chapman and Willy Adames are all projected to be assets on defense. But Arraez is one of the worst defenders at second, and they’ve got some issues around the field.
Heliot Ramos spent time pregame talking about how much work he’d put in with the glove, and the team brought in Ron Washington and Bader to try and help. But they’ve been a below-average team with the glove over the last three years combined, and they’ll need to improve there this year.
