SAN DIEGO, CA — A mother and son were found dead Monday evening in San Diego in what police were investigating as a possible murder-suicide, authorities said.
San Diego police officers and San Diego Fire-Rescue personnel responded around 7:40 p.m. to a report of gunshots in the 2400 block of San Marcos Avenue in the Burlingame neighborhood, according to the San Diego Police Department. Neighbors told authorities they heard gunfire and found a man on the front porch with an apparent gunshot wound to the head.
Officers arrived within minutes and found the 51-year-old man, along with a handgun nearby. Police began life-saving measures before the man was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
While rendering aid, officers saw an injured 83-year-old woman inside the home. They found the woman with a gunshot wound to the upper torso. She was pronounced dead at the scene.
Preliminary information indicated the pair were mother and son and lived together at the home, police said.
Detectives with the department’s Homicide Unit were investigating the deaths as a possible murder-suicide. The firearm recovered at the scene will be analyzed by the department’s crime laboratory.
Authorities urged anyone with information to call the department’s Homicide Unit at 619-531-2293 or San Diego County Crime Stoppers at 888-580-8477.
