Gorgeous weather, Netflix, the MLB stage to themselves, the Yankees in town, a cable car on the field, a fascinating new manager making his pro baseball regular-season debut — Wednesday night’s game at Oracle Park was jam-packed with fun and action.

Except for the San Francisco Giants

Ace Logan Webb had a tough second inning and the offense — projected to be dangerous — produced nothing of note, recording just two hits off Max Fried in a 7-0 loss to the Yankees, a misfire in Tony Vitello’s maiden major-league managerial appearance.

“Obviously, we wanted to win today for a number of reasons, and it’d be cool to get Tony that first win on Opening Day, but it didn’t happen,” third baseman Matt Chapman said. “The thing that Tony’s been great with — he does bring a lot of energy. He’s the same guy every day. And you know we’ll be ready to answer the bell on Friday.”

Vitello, whose season opener last year came against Hofstra while he was a Tennessee, had joked before the game that he’d just graduated from college. Discussing Netflix’s equally newbie status with a baseball broadcast, he said, “When the game starts, the people that are tuning in will get their money’s worth.”

Yankees fans were probably glad if they shelled out for the streaming service, but San Francisco fans didn’t find any drama or even comedy, just a cold reality show for their $7.99 to $17.99.

The Giants looked as flat as they did at their snooziest last year, which is usually the case with minimal offense. They had two at-bats against Fried with a runner in scoring position in his 6⅓ innings; Willy Adames struck out and Jung Hoo Lee grounded out, both in the first inning. San Francisco’s defense wasn’t sharp, either, with several errant throws.

“This is a half-painful, half-easy press conference to do, because it was pretty straight up — whichever phase you pick out — we just weren’t as good as we’re capable of being tonight, and they played well,” Vitello said.

Webb, who was away for much of the spring during Team USA’s WBC title-game run, was terrific against Aaron Judge, striking him out three times, and Keaton Winn made it a four-K night for Judge, the Golden Sombrero.

Otherwise, the night was the Yankees’, starting with the second inning, when they sent nine men to the plate, at one point getting six consecutive batters on base. Giancarlo Stanton started things with a single, Webb hit Jazz Chisholm and Jose Caballero knocked a double to right to send in the first run.

“I get the guy to ground out on the first pitch of the inning, then just all hell broke loose,” Webb said. “That’s on me.”

Two more singles and a Trent Grisham triple late, and it was 5-0.

“They started kind of ambushing,” Webb said. “I don’t know. I threw all the pitches I wanted to throw, not necessarily where I wanted to throw them, but yeah — they did a good job. I did a bad job.”

Vitello noted that most of Webb’s outing, he was effective. It was really just that one stretch in the second that dictated things.

“He’s attacking and and they were attacking, they got to him early in the count a few times,” Vitello said, “He’s a groundball pitcher, and the ball got elevated a couple times. It’s not like those guys were launching balls over outfielders’ heads or over the fence, but they stacked their hits together, and some of that came from the bottom of the order that had success.”

Stanton drove in a run with another single in the fifth, and Adames’ throwing error allowed one more in that inning.

New second baseman Luis Arráez drew a walk and singled in the eighth. The Giants’ three hits were their fewest in an opener since 1965, also three hits at Pittsburgh).

Along with Vitello, Arráez and center fielder Harrison Bader, reliever Caleb Kilian made his Giants’ debut, one neat moment for San Francisco.

Kilian, traded to the Cubs in 2021 in the Kris Bryant deal, returned to the Giants this winter and made his first Opening Day roster. He worked a 1-2-3 ninth, getting grounders from Judge and Cody Bellinger and striking out Ben Rice.

“The spot that Caleb Kilian earned to start the season with us is real,” Vitello said. “I thought he had the most positive inning of the night for us.”

Former Giants closer and All-Star Camilo Doval pitched a scoreless ninth for the Yankees, who have won their past seven games against San Francisco. They also shut out the Giants on Opening Day in 2023 at Yankee Stadium.

Lefty Robbie Ray starts Friday in the Giants’ first day game; he was an All-Star last year and is coming off a superb spring in which he put up a 1.37 ERA and held opponents to a .115 average.

“We always feel good when Robbie takes the mound,” Chapman said, “especially after a game like today, then going into an offday where we don’t get to roll right back into this thing. Robbie gets to come in here on Friday and set the tone for ‘Opening Day’ for us again.”

“He’ll provide some levity to a downer of a situation right now,” Vitello said, adding of Ray’s loud mound presence, “You’ve got the ultimate grunt master out there. … It’ll be good for Robbie to have an opportunity for kind of a punch-back game for us.”
